Mounting heavy items on a stud wall in Ireland is one of the most searched DIY questions for a good reason. Most modern Irish homes and apartments use timber or metal stud walls with plasterboard on the surface. Plasterboard on its own cannot hold heavy fixings. Why You Cannot Just Screw Into Plasterboard
Plasterboard is a surface material. It is designed to be flat, paintable, and fire resistant. It is not designed to carry load.
A standard 12.5mm plasterboard sheet will hold a lightweight picture frame with a cavity anchor. That is about it. Anything heavier, a large TV, a floating shelf with books, a bathroom cabinet, a wall-mounted radiator, needs something solid behind it to take the load.
In a traditional Irish brick or block wall, you can drill anywhere and hit solid masonry. In a stud wall, you are mostly hitting air. Even if you find a stud, a single 38mm or 50mm timber stud is not always enough for very heavy fixings across a wide spread.
This is the problem a pattress board solves.
What Is a Pattress Board?
A pattress board is a high-density fixing board that sits behind your plasterboard, spanning across multiple studs and creating a solid load-bearing zone anywhere on the wall surface.
Instead of hunting for studs or worrying about cavity anchors pulling through, you fix directly into the pattress board with standard screws. The board distributes the load evenly across the wall structure behind it.

How to Mount Heavy Items on a Stud Wall Properly
Here is the right approach from start to finish.
Step 1: Plan before you board. The pattress board needs to go in before the plasterboard is fixed. If you are at the stud wall stage of a build or renovation, this is the time to do it. Mark out every area where you plan to mount something heavy, TV wall, bathroom fittings, kitchen cabinets, radiator brackets, and install the pattress board across those zones.
Step 2: Fix the pattress board across the studs. The board spans between studs and is secured to them directly. It creates a continuous solid surface behind the plasterboard rather than isolated fixing points.
Step 3: Board over it as normal. Plasterboard goes on over the pattress board just as it would over standard studwork. From the outside the wall looks identical. The difference is entirely behind the surface.
Step 4: Fix your heavy items anywhere in the treated zone. TV brackets, mirror fixings, cabinet rails, basin brackets, radiator mounts. All go straight in with standard screws. No stud finder needed, no cavity anchors, no guesswork.
Where to Use a Pattress Board in Irish Homes
Any room where heavy wall fixings are planned benefits from a pattress board during the build or fit-out stage. The most common applications in Irish homes are:
Living rooms. Wall-mounted TVs are now standard in most Irish homes. A large 65 inch or 75 inch TV with a full-motion bracket puts serious stress on a fixing point. A pattress board behind the TV zone takes that load safely.
Bathrooms and ensuites. Wall-hung basins, mirrored cabinets, grab rails, and towel radiators all need solid fixings in a wet environment. Stud walls in bathrooms are particularly risky without a pattress board since moisture can weaken plasterboard over time, making cavity fixings even less reliable.
Kitchens. Wall cabinets carry significant weight, especially when loaded with crockery and food. A pattress board behind the cabinet zone means every cabinet goes up straight and stays there.
Home offices. Floating desks, monitor arms, shelving, and cable management systems all benefit from solid fixings rather than relying on stud locations.
Do I Need a Pattress Board in a Retrofit Situation?
If your walls are already boarded and plastered, fitting a pattress board is no longer an option without opening the wall back up. In that case your options are stud finders and direct stud fixings, or heavy-duty cavity anchors rated for the load you are hanging.
For anyone at the first fix stage of a build or renovation, a pattress board is the single best investment you can make for the long-term usability of a stud wall. It costs very little relative to the overall build cost and eliminates one of the most common problems in Irish homes.
